Gina M. Raimondo

March 5, 2021: Gina M. Raimondo was sworn in as the 40th U.S. Secretary of Commerce on March 3, 2021. She succeeds former Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross, in the position. Prior to her current position, Ms. Raimondo served as the 75th Governor of Rhode Island from 2015 to 2021 and was the state’s first female governor. After law school, Ms. Raimondo served as a law clerk to federal judge Kimba Wood of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She then went on to serve as senior vice president for fund development at the Manhattan offices of Village Ventures, a venture capital firm. She returned to Rhode Island in 2000, where she went on to cofound the state’s first venture capital firm, Point Judith Capital. In November 2010 she was elected to serve as General Treasurer of Rhode Island, a position she held from 2011 to 2015. She holds a A.B. in Economics from Harvard University, an M.A. and Dphil in Sociology from New College Oxford, and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
